Why is the borosilicate glass better than ordinary glass?

borosiicate glass

We often use glass products in our lives, such as glass cups, glass teapots, glass kitchenware, etc. Glass products also have many categories and are made of different materials.
So why is high borosilicate glass better than ordinary glass?

The composition of Borosilicate glass and Ordinary glass

The composition of borosiicate glass contains silica (SiO₂) and boron trioxide (B₂O₃) as the main glass-forming constituents. Boron makes it resistant to thermal shock and chemical corros.

The ordinary glass,it is often soda-lime glass, composed of silica, soda (sodium carbonate), and lime (calcium oxide). It is the most common type of glass used for everyday items.

The Thermal Resistance of Borosilicate glass and Ordinary glass

The borosilicate glass has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, meaning it can withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking. This makes it ideal for laboratory glassware, cookware (like Pyrex), and lighting.

The ordinary glass has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, making it more prone to cracking under sudden temperature changes. It’s less suitable for high-temperature or variable-temperature environments.

The Strength and Durability of Borosilicate glass and Ordinary glass

The borosilicate glass is more resistant to physical and chemical stresses, which makes it durable for industrial and scientific use.

The oridnary glass is less durable and more prone to scratches, but it is easier and cheaperto manufacture.

Weight and Transparency and Optical Properties

The borosilicate glass is slightly lighter than soda-lime glass because of its different composition. The ordianry glass is denser and heavier, depending on specific formulations. Both types are transparent, but borosilicate glass may have slightly better clarity due to its lower impurity levels. It can also be made more resistant to UV light, depending on its formulation.

Application

The borosilicate glass is used in laboratory equipment, cookware (e.g., measuring cups, baking dishes), teapots, high-temperature applications, and precision optics.

The ordinary glass is common in windows, bottles, jars and decorative items.

In summary, borosilcate lass is chosen for applications where durability, heat resistance and chemical stabilit are important,
